Spacey Jane

I met Spacey Jane at Bigsound music festival, 2019 and have been working as their tour photographer ever since. These photographs and 16mm motion film are from their ‘Sunlight’ Australian tour, 2021. The band were touring in between lockdowns and restrictions and I was fortunate to document their day-to-day life on the road. While on the Sunlight tour, we did a press shoot for their upcoming singles, ‘Lots Of Nothing’ & ‘Lunchtime’, released later that year.

Gang Of Youths

Gang of Youths on their massive sold out ‘Say Yes To Life’ Australian tour, 2016. The band sold out Sydney’s Enmore Theatre five times, doing the same for their shows in Melbourne and Brisbane. I was shooting freelance at the time and wanted to photograph their show on film instead of digital. I knew this would fit with the creative for the album they were promoting at the time ‘Go Farther In Lightness’ as I’d noticed a lot of the assets for the record were shot on black and white film, dark and grainy, with dust particles left for texture. I wanted my live shots to fit this direction, so I thought why not, I have three songs to shoot and two rolls to make it happen.

Flight To Dubai

This series of Flight To Dubai started in 2013 when I was new to shooting live music and continues through to now. The series includes images from hometown shows during the band’s early days at The Lass O’Gowrie and The Cambridge Hotels in Newcastle, through to Sydney shows at Oxford Art Factory and The Lansdowne. There are also shots of DIY home and backyard gigs during a time in 2017 when Sydney’s live music scene was facing lock out closures, forcing venues to shut early which heavily impacted the city’s nightlife and culture. Smaller acts and independent artists had no option other than to play at a handful of venues, or to create a space of their own to keep live music alive. This is one of my largest body of works as I have photographed the band for nine years, documenting their career from their very first days to today. Some of these images were exhibited at Newcastle Art Gallery for ‘We Can Be Heroes: A BACKSTAGE PASS’.
